Book Review: The Hypnotist’s Love Story By Liane Moriarty

I will start by saying that this book is deceitful. It was one of the few books that gave me such a headache that I wanted to beat my head against the wall. I just seriously wanted this book to be finished as quickly as possible, and I wished I had DNF this book, but as I was early in my reading journey, I thought I needed to finish every book I picked up. The book follows the story of Ellen O’Farrel, a hypnotherapist who works out of the strange beachfront home she inherited from her grandparents. Her professional life is going well, but she can’t say the same about her personal life. Until she meets a young man named Patrick, who is handsome and single. But Patrick has a stalker, his ex-girlfriend, Sasha, who won’t leave him alone, and now Ellen wants to meet Sasha.

Honestly, when I read the blurb, I thought it would be a thriller; however, the whole book, I was waiting to read a plot twist, and legit nothing happened. What was this book? I think I was definitely getting hypnotised because of how long this book was, and I was going in circles. The same thing was getting repetitive, and I was over it. The character of Ellen was written really well. She was someone who got really intrigued by things that normal people would want to stay away from. Sasha is a stalker of Ellen’s boyfriend, and Ellen wants to know everything about Sasha rather than her boyfriend.

Then we have the perspective of Sasha, again, the writer did an incredible job portraying her character. Her actions were kind of nutty, however, as a reader, I did get sympathetic towards her as I got to see in depth what happened to her and her situation. Patrick was kind of an illogical character as he didn’t do much about the situation with Sasha. If he handled the situation well, maybe it would be better for everyone else.

I have to say the writer’s writing was really hypnotising. The book and the story are very unique, but I wish there was more depth to the plot. As the book was super long, it got me frustrated to just continue reading it without seeing any dramatic structure to the plot, as the blurb says it will. The plotline would be excellent if there were plot twists and more drama in the book.

The blurb is deceitful; that’s all I am going to say.

Never say Never…

Sometimes there is no next time, no second chance, no time out.

Sometimes it is NOW or NEVER.

I will start by saying, take that opportunity, it has come your way, which means you were chosen for it. As an adult, you need to come out of your comfort zone, you can’t hide forever, you need to take that risk, no matter how much you are afraid. At this age, you have to test your ability, and this will happen when you take on the opportunity that scares you. Being an adult is scary; however, it also allows you to explore and find yourself. I really want to see how much I am capable of things, and that will only happen if I take risks, no matter how nerve-wrecking it is. I know the feeling of saying no to something and then regretting it so much and thinking if only I took it, maybe I would have failed, but at least I tried and learned. Taking the opportunity to learn and teach how to do things right and better as we move on in life. Everything is scary at first because you have not tried yet, you won’t know how much you are capable of, how much you can do, unless you try. You have to try and start somewhere to keep going and make the life you’ve always dreamed about. I recently learned how to drive a car, however, I was so afraid at first, even though I can drive well, my confidence was so low. But I know I have to start the car and keep going to actually see my progress. And guess what, I drove so well and now my confidence level has increased because I know what my flaws were, and I worked on them, and now I can control the car. Nobody is perfect, and people we see who are so good at their job started somewhere, started imperfectly, to reach where they are so perfect. No matter what, never say never. Life is all about risk and especially in matters where your whole future lies ahead of you. Taking that opportunity will give you some result, but saying no will never allow you to move ahead, and the result will always be nil. So take the opportunity, I know you have a lot of courage to rule the whole world, so never say never…

You have to fight for what you want.

Review: ‘Train to Busan’ Korean Movie (2016)

“We’re all just trying to survive, but what’s the point of surviving if we lose our humanity?”

I love action movies, especially when zombies are involved. I know I need to watch Train to Busan as it has everything I love, and I was not disappointed. Basically, Train to Busan is a Korean movie that follows the story of a daughter and father who have a strained relationship. Seok-Woo and his daughter, Soo-an, are on the way to Busan; however, the journey becomes a nightmare when a virus breaks out, turning people into zombies. And now they are trapped inside the train, and Seok-Woo needs to do anything to save his daughter.

If we start with the character of Seok-Woo, he is a father who sees nothing but his work. He has a hard time expressing his love for his daughter. He doesn’t really understand his daughter, or we could say he is so invested in his work that he doesn’t try to. The character development of Seok-Woo was phenomenal to watch; however, looking at him, we understand that we never know how much time we have. So we should learn to care about our family when we have time, otherwise it could be too late and only regret is left behind.

Soo-an, her character is such a sweetheart. She is so kind for her age that even though his father doesn’t understand her, she understands him so much. It is so good to see her lecturing her father and making him realise. During the hard time, she gets to repair her relationship with her father, and her father did everything to keep her safe.

Sang-Hwa, another masterpiece character of the movie. He is in contrast with Seok-Woo, and it was amazing to watch him. He has a heart of gold and is ready to help anyone, regardless of being in danger himself. He is one of my favourite characters that I will not forget. Nobody would have survived if he hadn’t helped. Sung-Gyeong, the wife of Sang-Hwa, another favourite character of mine. She is the epitome of beauty with kindness. The way she took care of Soo-an and how her bravery was beautiful to watch.

The plot is phenomenal yet heartbreaking. At some time, it was so heart-wrenching to see what keeps happening to the people and their families. Because what was happening to their loved ones was happening in front of them, and after surviving, they will never get back to normal. The dialogues, cinematography, and everything are top-notch and kept me on the edge. The acting of each and every character made the movie so haunting and realistic.

I highly recommend it, but please be ready to witness heart-wrenching scenes and an ending no one is ready for.

“Even if we make it to Busan, what kind of world will we find there?”

The chaos of life…

“Life is divine Chaos. It’s messy, and it’s supposed to be that way.” – Keats

I love calmness, but I also adore the chaos of life. When you are walking on the street surrounded by thousands of people and wonder what kind of life they are living and what kind of life you are living, but at the same time, you are in the same place. Life is something; if we look upon it as a queen of mischief, it will throw you down, but like a magic flying carpet, it will catch you. I believe in the chaos of life. I like trying things that seem so out of this world, things that bring drama to my life, because we only live once, and no one knows what will happen next, so why not do dramatic things? I believe that embracing the chaos of life gives you a whole new perspective on it, you find beauty in things that you never even thought about, and you get to know the beauty and the chaos it carries, bringing you the ultimate comfort. All great things are embedded with chaos; chaos is constant in life, but we must find peace within it. Messy things can be beautiful, like abstract painting that might not make sense to a common person, but it looks phenomenal. Maybe the chaos of life will make you go mad, but it’s okay, everyone is a bit mad, so instead burn it, let go and just dive into the chaos life has brought. Maybe this will help you find where you truly belong. Embracing life makes everything so easy, and we actually get to see the beauty of it, but it also comes with a lot of chaos that we need to hug in order to go past it and find the beauty and peace in it. I have heard that to survive, you need to be wild in chasing your dreams, and that will happen when you know how to embrace the chaos of life…

And she embraced the chaos as it painted her life with purpose.

Book Review: Keep It in the Family by John Marrs

Another thriller book by John Marrs, and just like the previous book, it is one of the weirdest books I have read, where I figured out every plot twist and wondered what I was reading. The story follows a couple named Mia and Finn who are busy turning a derelict house into their dream house. As their dream house gets ready, Mia discovers a chilling message: I WILL SAVE THEM FROM THE ATTIC. Following the clue, the couple discovers that their dream house was once a house of horrors.

I picked this book up because the blurb looked freaking interesting however, the book was not. I probably went into it thinking something totally different, so maybe that is the reason I didn’t like it. Every character in this book is weird and predictable because the twist is just out there. The characters, even though they were predictable, were all so unrealistic, and I cannot picture them as humans at all, especially Mia and Finn’s baby.

The plot was kind of questionable because what was even that? It was so clear who the culprit was and what the plot twists and I think that is what shocked me. The plot was so unrealistic, and the plot twists made no sense, as everything was hard to believe in what was happening in the book.

It was like a horror movie where we know something is going to come out of the dark, and we are going to scream. But this book didn’t make me scream, but it made me so frustrated that I had to pause and think about my book and life choices.

You probably won’t be missing much if you don’t read this book.

Health

Having zero health problems is a luxury that people don’t think is a luxury.

Health is so important, and I have taken it for granted. In the past few years, not only I but all of us have realised how important it is to be healthy. When you are healthy mentally and physically, you can do anything. Just like we talk about how important mental health is in the exact way physical health is, it is just as important. I have been busy studying non-stop for the competitive exam, and I have realised how much I need to rest my body. I have been studying while putting pressure on my body, and now I’m stressed. Balancing is so important, I need to study as well as keep my body moving, like working out or simply walking. I don’t need to go fast and get stuck, but I need to walk and go on for a long time. And this happens when I know how to balance my life, like prioritising my mental and physical health. Health is a luxury, and it is such a blessing to wake up and do things that we had planned the day before. Just like life, health is also unpredictable, and we need to prioritise it as much as we can. Money is money, but health is also wealth. If we are healthy, we can move and earn a living as well as live the life we always wanted. A healthy mind and a healthy body will create a healthy lifestyle, which everyone wants, so that is why it is important to learn how to take care of the body. Listening to your body and stopping when you know that it’s getting out of hand before it goes out of hand, as it will make you tired for days, and things will stretch for a long time. Just like any career and responsibility, health is equally or more important, so please take care of it.

Take care of yourself. You only have one you.

Review: ‘Bring It On, Ghost’ K-drama (2016)

“Female ghosts with a lot of regrets are strong. A saying goes that a woman’s vengeance knows no bounds. – Monk Myung Chul.

Another 2016 drama that I can’t let go of, the amount of time I have rewatched it is insane, which says how much I liked it. Something was definitely there in the year 2016 because each drama that came in that year was phenomenal, and almost a decade wrote a review on it. The drama follows the story of Park Bong-pal, who can see ghosts, and he hates it, as nobody wants to be friends with him. So he became a young exorcist in order to earn money and treat his eyes. Amidst that, he meets a female ghost, Kim Hyun Ji, who helps him send ghosts to the afterlife while waiting for her turn.

Let’s start with the hero himself, Park Bong-pal. His story is so sad. He can see ghosts, and because of that, he is constantly alert, which leads him to overreact. When he was a kid and all the other kids were afraid of him, and he was unable to find friends. He is a lonely boy surviving college and doing exorcisms in order to earn money and treat his eyes. His transition when he made friends was so heartwarming to watch because a lonely boy who doesn’t even know how to laugh has new people by his side. I was mind blown when I got to know how he can see ghosts and how he is connected with the female lead, Hyun Ji.

Kim Hyun Ji is your typical high school girl who lost her life in an accident, and now she is roaming around, searching for ways how she can go to the afterlife. Her and Bong-pal’s first meeting was iconic. I was laughing so much. She makes a deal with Bong-pal that she will help him find the ghosts while he will help her go to the afterlife. She is so chaotic, and a perfect magic sprinkles in Bong-pal’s dull life. I loved her so much; she was so brave in what she did, which almost cost her life.

The chemistry is also good, as in we will look at them as a couple with action. Their fighting scenes, them working together and then having a whole banter about it is so good to watch. According to the storyline, their chemistry was perfectly written. As it is a fantasy drama, falling in love becomes more tough as one is real and one is not and seeing that aspect in this drama was so heart-wrenching.

The side characters, the friend group of Bong-pal, I am in love with both of them. One of the reasons why I liked this drama was because of the friendship group. It is said that truly unexpected friends bring another kind of magic to one’s life, like Choi Cheon-sang and Kim In-rang brought to Bong-pal’s dull life. Both are so chaotic, their scenes make a breath of fresh air amidst the intense storyline. Their dialogues and banter were top-notch.

The storyline is Chef Kiss. What is not there, horror, mystery, comedy, romance, and a lot of tears. It was so intense because we audience got to know before the characters what happened, and I was so bumped up as the characters didn’t know anything. The way the storyline wrapped up around Bong-pal and Hyun Ji was brilliant. And when the secret was revealed about Hyun Ji, I was flabbergasted. In the beginning, the drama will look chill and about exorcism; however, as we move on, it will become more intense, and secrets begin to reveal how Bong-pal and Hyun Ji are interconnected. Also, a series of them capturing ghosts and the backstory of it was brilliant to watch.

The ending was amazing, I liked the fact that it was not in a hurry, but it made more sense how it wrapped up. Highly recommend this drama, please watch it if you want to go on a rollercoaster ride.

“It wouldn’t hurt to have a friend help you out when you need it.” -Kim Hyun Ji.

The sudden urge to disappear…

If in the mood to delete everything, go missing for the time being. – MA

You know when you’ve had enough of everything and just want to book a treehouse in the middle of nowhere and spend some slow time there with your favourite things. I don’t know how many things I think about this, but I wish it could be this easy. Other than the exhausting days, I want time to slow down so I can live in peace and quiet for a long time. It’s becoming ironic how fast the time is going. At first, we used to think weeks were far away, but years passed by in the blink of an eye. The sudden urge to just disappear and find myself, understand myself and the life I have been given. Sometimes, amidst the chaos of life, it becomes difficult to find what we are doing and lose sight of our purpose, and we want to give up. It definitely gets exhausting, and then comes the urge to just disappear from the chaos of life. As an adult, I have realised peace is so expensive, you just can’t find it anywhere, but you need to disappear for a while from the chaos of life. The urge to just disappear and find peace that you have been craving for a long time. When people say that a break is important, it also includes going far away from everyone and finding yourself again. The tension in the mind and the heaviness in the heart need a place to ooze out, and what is better than disappearing without telling anyone to your favourite place and letting yourself have a proper time to rest. Life is unpredictable, and there are going to be moments when we feel like nothing is going the right way. To avoid feeling insecure, it is better to just disappear and take time for yourself to heal. You are doing great, and if things get too hard, it’s okay to take a step back, breathe, go away for a while, and give in to the urge to disappear.

Heal yourself first, not the world. – MA

Book Review: The Right Move (Windy City Series #2) by Liz Tomforde

“Sometimes the quietest love is the loudest.” – Ryan Shay.

I disliked the first book so much, but I heard that it would get better from so many reviews, so I decided to give it a try. Honestly, I can’t believe there is so much difference between protagonists written by the same author. Ryan Shay is the newest Captain of the Devils, Chicago’s NBA Team, and the last thing he wants is a distraction like Indy Ivers, his sister’s best friend. Indy has nowhere to go, and her best friend has the craziest idea to let her stay at her brother’s place. Ryan and Indy are polar opposites, but there is a spark…

Ryan Shay healed this series for me. I liked him so much because of the way he was. I liked that whatever happened to him, he didn’t turn worse, but handled it really well. What happened to him was so out of the box, I was not expecting it, but it shows he was the green flag from the start. He is caring and lovable, a male lead hard to find. He is a standard book boyfriend who knows what his girls want; he is a perfect act of service to exist.

Indy Ivers’ character was amazing. I found her amusing, and her thoughts always made me laugh. I liked that she was so understanding about living with Ryan rather than being arrogant about it. I liked that I did not see any arrogance in this book. She is beautiful inside and outside, I liked how confident she is in herself.

The chemistry is really great too. The bickering and the tension, and I liked that there was nothing forced between them, but it came naturally. His care for her was enduring, and her understanding of him is what we call an understanding couple.

Just like the first book, there is nothing about basketball in the book, which was disappointing. The last part was okay, so basically, both talked about each other’s flaws, and still, they had a misunderstanding about the same. I hated it to the core. The ending, to be honest, I had enough with this book. At the 75% mark, I had enough because that would be the perfect ending, but no, the remaining 25% was just a misunderstanding of things that they had already talked about. I think the biggest complaint of mine from this series is that it is too long, and I get bored.

In the end, I found the book all over the place, and my interest went below zero. The plot was nice and definitely out of the box. But I don’t know why stars need to take instructions about how to live their personal life from the team that didn’t sit right with me. According to me, it was really good in the beginning, but again, in the end, I wanted to get over it quickly. Because I got bored, there is nothing that I remember and would highly recommend. My biggest pet peeve is long chapters and long books, especially in romance. Maybe that is the reason I liked it, but just not much.

Give it a try if you want. Will say Ryan Shay is the ultimate book boyfriend.

“His quiet love. It’s always the loudest.” – Indy Ivers.

We will never be happy…

I hope this year and in the coming year, you find time to be happy not just strong.

Life is unfair, we all know that, and it’s okay to complain about it; however, will it change anything? Yes, we might feel better, and it’s totally fine to pour out our feelings, but until when? When something happens in my life out of the sudden, I always ask myself after panicking, what’s worse that could happen? And I remember all my old times when I dealt with so many things, and I survived, which is the biggest thing. I have learned that we humans always think first so negatively that it takes all of our energy to think positively. As an adult, I have learned that I have to make my life however I want it to be, tough, but that is what life is all about; life will never be easy until we stop overthinking it. Life will drag you across the dirty roads, but it is you who will stand up, shrug off that dirt and carry forward. When I realised the facts about me and how much I overthink things, the sudden realisation happened when I got the chance to be happy in my life. We will never be happy if we overlook things that we already have. No human has everything; there are certain aspects that everyone lacks, but what about those things that we have, like the privilege to sleep, just the smallest thing that we take for granted? Life is not only about achieving things but also appreciating what we already have. We will never be happy if we look at the negative side of life. Life is unfair, but it is you who will make it fair for yourself. If you think that life will automatically become fair, you are in serious denial; you have to work for it. I know it is hard, but you are the strongest soldier out there who knows exactly what they want, so go for it, otherwise, you will never be happy…

We will never be this young again.
