Book Review: Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda

This book was a headache to go through; I am not lying when I write it. I know books are meant to be dramatic; however, this thriller was on another level. It frustrated me so much that I wondered why I even picked up this book. The book is about Hazel Sharp, the daughter of a detective. She inherits her childhood home and is drawn to the town and its people. After a decade, Hazel is back, and she is going to discover something unexpected that might change her life.

I don’t know how and why I finished this book, but I have to say nothing made sense to me. After reading the blurb, I thought it was going to be all detective, but it all dived into family relations. I felt that it focused a lot on family dynamics rather than being a thriller. More than half of the book was based on family dynamics, and in the end, a revelation happened, but I was so fed up that I just wasn’t able to enjoy the twist and the ending.

The character of Hazel was so annoying, like, why is she engaging in things when she doesn’t have to? So many moments she was told to just mind her business, but OMG, she won’t listen. I couldn’t like her at all. I hate characters like this; it frustrates me so much. Also, so many things were happening at once, and it was so confusing. Like the round-up of the story and its relation was not well executed; it made more of a mess, according to me.

I want a thriller that I enjoy rather than one that gives me a headache, and this one was not for me.

Book Review: Guess Again by Charlie Donlea

For such a long time, I really wanted to read a mystery thriller, a proper one with a detective and all and when everyone started raving about Guess Again by Charlie Donlea. I knew it was time, and everyone liked it so much. So the book is about a girl, Callie, who disappeared 10 years ago. And the detective working on that case, Ethan Hall, now works as an ER doctor. He gets a call from his former detective partner to reopen this cold case and find unfinished answers.

I have to start with the plot, it was amazing with twists and twists coming every second. Throughout, it was engaging, and I really wanted to know how it would end. However, the book is huge with many chapters that are so short. The different places and timelines were so chaotic that I couldn’t keep up with them. Because of it, I was dreading continuing. At one point, I wanted to know, and at another point, I was getting confused with all the names of the places. I wish it were not written that way; it would have made the book fast-paced and more enjoyable.

I legit guessed the plot twist. I guess I don’t have to guess again! (hahaha) I will be honest, I didn’t like the plot twist, it was too predictable, or would I say too common for a thriller book. I like the vibe of the book, the chapters are short but very chaotic, which, for a thriller, might be a part I didn’t like, and till the end, it never really made sense to me about the places.

After reading the blurb, I thought that the detectives would work together; however, the entire book is totally different. The storyline is good, the vibes match with it perfectly; however, it was very common, so I didn’t find it amazing, or something I will rave to others.

The characters are good, including Ethan Hall, the main protagonist. The pressure of finding out what exactly happened to Callie, while his own personal and professional life is getting mixed up. As we move through so many POVs and characters, nobody really stands out as such.

If you want, you can give this book a try.

Book Review: The Eternity Train by M Ahsan Al-Haadee

First of all, I will start by saying thank you, Ahsan, for sending me the digital copy of the book. So basically, as you all know, I love mysteries and thrillers, but what better could it be when magic is also added to the same? The Eternity Train is a book with everything you would ask for: thriller, mystery and magic, and I don’t think I have ever read such a beautiful description of things. The book is about a fourteen-year-old girl named Daffodil who, after an argument, runs away from home and boards an unsettling train at Moor Street Station. At first she doesn’t notice, however, as the journey goes on, Dafoodil realises that the train doesn’t seem normal and she is stuck. The only way to escape is by solving the puzzle and uncovering the secrets.

First, I need to start with the plot. I have never read anything like this before. I am not going to lie, at first it was hella confusing to wrap my mind around what was going on, but later with Daffodil I was also on the wild ride. The book is a part of a duology, so it is still very much incomplete to see how Daffodil will move forward. The description done by the author was so fantastic because everything about this train and the way it was surrounded was out of this world. I absolutely loved all the descriptions; it made me feel that I was in the book.

Then talking about the Character of Dafoodil for a fourteen-year-old, she is one of the smartest girls who knows how to use her brain. I really like her emotional as well as her intellectual mindset. I liked her interaction with other characters, and the way she started to know how to play this game was amazing to read.

In the book, I found some of the interesting characters with such an amazing plot. My favourite thing was definitely the description of things, and the author’s writing made it easy to understand where the story is heading. I was really looking forward to what unknown land the train would take us to, and each time it didn’t disappoint. The ending shocked me, so all I am going to say is.

I highly recommend this book.

Book Review: The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf

I am really in my thriller era, and the next on my list was The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf, and it was the first book I picked by this author. I wanted to read a one-room thriller with a mysterious vibe, and I think this one did a great job. The book follows the story of a woman, Wylie Lark, who retreats to a small cottage in the middle of nowhere to write her new novel and gets stuck in a deadly snowstorm. Things turned bad when, in the middle of a snowstorm, she received an unexpected visitor, which left her in shock. But she doesn’t know how that visitor is going to tangle her with her own secrets.

Let’s start with the character of Wylie, a woman who is trying to build a good relationship with her son. At first, I couldn’t guess how she would be connected, but OMG, the plot twist. And she is definitely a hard-core thriller main character who would survive it. I saw the plot twist coming from miles; however, when it got revealed, it was so good. There are many characters in the book, and all of them are just mindblowing and the way they got connected. I think that is what I really loved in this book, and perfectly, all of the timelines and POVs got connected.

The plot is amazing. At first, I felt a little confused keeping up with all the POVs, but the way it all got connected in the end was absolutely mindblowing. The storyline is emotional, I won’t say it’s creepy for me, and definitely the curiosity to learn what happened. It is fast-paced, and the writing is really good.

This thriller is in four POVs, and it narrates the story of three different timelines. It was definitely a task to keep up with three different timelines, but the author’s writing really made it easy to focus. There are many plot twists. I saw some coming while others were different and shocked me, and it was amazing.

The ending is beautiful, especially the last line before the epilogue. I prefer ending where it all makes sense.

I highly recommend it.

Review: ‘Love Me If You Dare’ C-drama (2015)

“You’re actually reading such illogical and groundless novels.” – Bo Jinyan.

“It’s a romance fiction, what logic does it need?” – Jian Yao.

This drama has put me in a chokehold since I have watched it. Chinese dramas can have cutesy and school vibes but they are also not behind when it comes to thriller and suspense dramas just like this 2015 drama, Love Me If You Dare. It follows the story of Jenny Jian Yao who starts a job as a translator in a mysterious lonely house and it turns out that the house belongs to a criminal psychologist, Bo Jinyan. Later a series of mysterious murders started to take place so Bo Jinyan and his assistant Jian Yao remarked on the journey to solve this mystery.

What can I say about this drama, it’s perfection. As you know I love thrillers and mystery dramas so when I saw this drama I knew I had to watch it and since then, I can’t seem to ever forget about it. It’s been a long time since I have watched it. I went into this drama thinking it was going to be a simple mystery thriller drama but I was so wrong, it is so intense. Let’s start with the character of Jian Yao, the female protagonist. I love how her character is so feminine and gentle but at the same time, she is so smart. Her aura is like a princess so charming and calming yet very intelligent. I loved that she was not shown as someone dumb for a thriller mystery drama.

Then we have the male protagonist, Bo Jinyan. What can I say about him, he has lived this character like no other. His eyes are so hypnotizing which makes the scenes more intense. His mind and how he knew what the criminal had done added a lot of creepiness to the drama. His aura, intelligence and sense of humour were amazing. The male lead did such an incredible job, I don’t think my words would ever be able to do the justice. His one-line comment with a serious face never failed to make me laugh.

The chemistry was just breathtaking. Their scenes felt so real, I don’t even think they tried because both felt so natural. Their scenes were also intense to watch, I could see their chemistry oozing. The romance was amazingly maintained in a thriller drama, I didn’t find it forced but it built up naturally.

The plot was everything, till the end I kept guessing what is the plot twist but still I was dumbfounded. The storyline is filled with angst, drama, suspense, and crime; everything is top-notch. I was legit rooted to my seat just to watch the next episode and get shocked every time. There is also comedy with Bo Jinyan one one-line comment and Jian Yao’s response. The cases were so intense I was so much deeper into finding out what would happen next. The investigation was mind-blowing and it felt so natural as I was also part of the same. The side characters were also very good and fun. The ending episodes were so intense but heartbreaking.

I highly recommend this drama but please check trigger warnings as much sensitive content is found.

Review: ‘Healer’ K-drama (2014)

“Fate, destiny, I believe in that kind of stuff. If it didn’t exist, why would words for it exist, right?” – Young Shin

I just re-watched the drama to write a review after reliving the old vibes from this K-drama. I watched it years ago and since then I re-watch it once in a while. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since this drama was aired. It is a mystery and thriller drama with intense chemistry between the leads. Chae Young-shin is a failed reporter who aspires to become like Kim Mun-ho, a star reporter. Then she crosses paths with Seo Jung-hu, a mysterious criminal named ‘Healer’, and their lives intervene.

It is one of the finest K-dramas out there with such a good plot line, the whole time I did not have a dull moment. The mystery is very much intervening however the execution is done so well. The twists and turns were amazingly inbuilt and I loved how the main characters were so greatly connected. The drama is filled with suspense and slowly the mystery is revealed and how each is connected.

Chae Young Shin is a sunshine that was developed amidst black clouds. I loved her and her talks. Seo Jung Hu is a character who truly knows how to show his duality. He in black is everything and I love the duality in him a lot. I loved Kim Mun-ho, if not for him the drama wouldn’t have progressed. The biggest shout out to Jo Min-Ja, she is hilarious and the best side character to exist in K-drama. I loved Cha Young Shin’s family and how much they loved her.

The chemistry is insane, you all. I loved every scene of them especially when things were getting revealed and how they are connected to each other. The love is pure as both went through so much and fate brought them together again. I would say, he was sunshine and she was midnight rain.

I highly recommend this drama if you want to watch a story filled with suspense and intense chemistry.
